Becoming Catholic (OCIA)

- O.C.I.A. stands for The Order of Christians Initiation for Adults.
  
  It serves two purposes:
  
  First of all, O.C.I.A. is a process of inquiry for those wishing to learn more about the Catholic faith, and/or for those who think God may be calling them to join the Church. Click Here for this year's schedule!
  
  Secondly, O.C.I.A. is initiation into the Church. For those who are moved to do so, the process leads men and women into full communion with the Catholic Church.
  
  There's no commitment required to begin the process. At each stage of the journey, participants discern God's call in their lives and decide whether or not they should move forward to the next stage. Furthermore, moving into the next stage of the process doesn't mean a commitment to become Catholic. The final commitment (similar to saying "I do") doesn't occur until stage 4 of the process when participants actually receive the Sacraments of Initiation and commit themselves to a new life in Christ. Participants are welcome to stay in R.C.I.A. as long as they wish, with no pressure to make any final commitments.

- Must I make a commitment to participate in this program?
  No! We realize that many people are searching and that you may need to know more about the Church before you make such a commitment. We ask no firm commitment until the beginning of Lent.
- I was baptized a Methodist, Baptist, etc. Must I be re-baptized in order to join the Catholic Church?
  No! Most Protestant baptisms are valid and sacramental. If you are seeking full communion with the Catholic Church you will not be baptized again. You will simply make a Profession of Faith and receive the sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist.
